  • How to Get Involved in Mouth Cancer Action Month This November

Every November, the Oral Health Foundation launches Mouth Cancer Action Month, a national campaign that raises awareness about one of the UK’s fastest-growing cancers. At Bandlish & Auplish, we are dedicated to helping our patients understand the risks, recognise the warning signs, and take proactive steps to protect their oral health.

Why Mouth Cancer Awareness Matters

Mouth cancer is on the rise in the UK, with 10,825 new cases diagnosed last year, an increase of 38% over the past decade and 133% compared to 20 years ago. Sadly, 3,637 people lost their lives to the disease last year. Around half of these cases affect the tongue and tonsils, and survival rates depend heavily on how early the cancer is detected.

The earlier a problem is caught, the easier it tends to be to treat, and mouth cancer is no exception. Regular dental visits can make all the difference. If it’s been more than 12 months since your last check-up, now is the perfect time to book an appointment with your trusted dentist in Harley Street, where our experienced team at Bandlish & Auplish can ensure your oral health is in the best possible condition.

Understanding the Risks

The exact causes of mouth cancer are still unclear, but lifestyle factors play a significant role. In fact, up to 90% of all mouth cancers are linked to habits we can control. Smoking, for instance, increases your risk by up to ten times compared to non-smokers, whilst drinking alcohol to excess is associated with nearly a third of all mouth cancer cases. Combining smoking and drinking can triple your risk.

Two of the most effective ways to reduce your chances of developing mouth cancer are:

  • Stop smoking — or seek support to quit.
  • Reduce alcohol intake — moderation makes a big difference.

By making these small but powerful lifestyle changes, you not only protect your mouth but your overall well-being.

Know the Warning Signs

Awareness saves lives. Unfortunately, only about 8% of people in the UK are aware of the major risk factors associated with mouth cancer. That’s why Mouth Cancer Action Month is so vital, it’s about education, prevention, and early detection.

Be vigilant and look out for the following common signs:

  • Ulcers that don’t heal after three weeks
  • Red or white patches in the mouth
  • Unusual lumps, bumps, or swellings

A simple 45-second self-check at home can be life-saving. If you notice anything unusual, it’s crucial to get checked as soon as possible. At Bandlish & Auplish, our dental team is trained to spot early signs of mouth cancer and can refer you to a specialist if needed.

The Connection Between Gum Health and Mouth Cancer

Whilst mouth cancer and gum disease are different conditions, maintaining good gum health is essential for overall oral wellbeing. Understanding the stages of gum disease — from mild gingivitis to severe periodontitis — is key to preventing long-term damage. Early detection is just as important here.

If you’re already treating gum disease, continue to attend regular appointments and follow professional advice. A healthy mouth reduces the risk of bacterial infections and inflammation, which in turn supports your body’s ability to fight off more serious oral conditions. Our dentist in Harley Street can help you manage both gum health and cancer risk through personalised care and advanced dental screenings.

How You Can Get Involved This November

Taking part in Mouth Cancer Action Month doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s how you can make a difference:

  • Book your dental check-up — Regular visits allow early detection of both mouth cancer and gum disease.
  • Spread awareness — Share information with family, friends, and colleagues. Encourage others to learn about the signs and symptoms.
  • Support the campaign — Visit the Oral Health Foundation’s website to donate, read more about the cause, or participate in fundraising events.
  • Make healthy choices — Cut down on smoking and alcohol, maintain a balanced diet, and keep up with good oral hygiene habits.

Your Health Starts with a Simple Check

Your oral health is too important to ignore. If it’s been more than a year since your last dental visit, or if you’ve noticed any unusual symptoms in your mouth, don’t wait. The expert team at Bandlish & Auplish, your trusted dentist in Harley Street, is here to help.

Together, we can reduce the risks, increase awareness, and make early detection a priority. Remember — a simple check could save your life.
