Root canal treatment is a specialist dental procedure used to treat infection or inflammation in the soft tissue at the centre of a tooth, known as the dental pulp. When the pulp becomes damaged-due to decay, trauma or deep fillings-it can cause pain, sensitivity and swelling. Without treatment, the infection may spread and the tooth may need to be removed.
Root canal therapy involves removing the diseased pulp, disinfecting the root canal system and filling it to prevent reinfection. The procedure is designed to relieve discomfort, eliminate infection and preserve the natural tooth.
Root canal treatment can save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted. It helps preserve the natural structure of your bite, maintain facial aesthetics and support the health of surrounding teeth. Treatment allows you to chew and speak comfortably while avoiding the cost and complexity of tooth replacement options such as implants or bridges.

Your treatment begins with a consultation to assess your tooth and confirm the diagnosis. If root canal therapy is required, your endodontist will gently access the centre of the tooth to remove the damaged pulp. The root canals are cleaned, disinfected and sealed to prevent future infection. The tooth is then restored with a temporary or permanent filling.
In many cases, your general dentist will later place a crown on the treated tooth to restore its full function and strength. You may also be recalled for a review six to twelve months after treatment to assess healing.

Specialist endodontists have the training, experience and technology needed to treat complex root canal cases with a high degree of accuracy. Some general dentists may not have access to the tools required for advanced care.
Your first visit will usually be a consultation. We will review your dental history, examine the affected tooth and take any necessary X-rays. Your endodontist will explain the treatment options available and provide an estimate for your care. You will also be asked to complete a medical history form—please bring a list of any medications and your GP’s contact details.
The main alternative is to extract the affected tooth. This may be followed by replacement with a denture, bridge or dental implant. However, preserving the natural tooth is often the preferred option when possible.
The cost of treatment varies depending on the tooth involved and the complexity of the case. A full estimate will be provided during your consultation. Root canal therapy is often more cost-effective than extraction and tooth replacement in the long term.
Following root canal therapy, your general dentist will restore the tooth permanently—often with a crown to protect it from fracture. A review appointment is typically scheduled within six to twelve months to monitor healing.
