White fillings on Harley Street: tooth-coloured, natural-looking repairs

What are white fillings?

White fillings, also called composite or tooth-coloured fillings, repair teeth affected by decay, cracks or wear using a resin that is matched to the colour of your natural teeth. At our Harley Street practice, white fillings are our standard choice for most restorations, so repairs blend in rather than showing as dark patches when you smile or laugh.

Composite is bonded directly to the tooth, so it often needs less removal of healthy tooth structure than a traditional metal filling. It is also mercury-free.

Benefits of white fillings

Natural appearance. Shade-matched to your tooth, with no dark lines or grey showing through.

Conservative. Bonding to the tooth means more of your healthy enamel is kept.

Mercury-free. A good option if you would prefer not to have amalgam.

Single visit. Most white fillings are placed in one appointment.

Replacing silver fillings with white fillings

Many patients come to us wanting to replace old amalgam fillings, either because they are worn or because they would prefer a more natural look. We check each existing filling first. If it is sound, we may advise leaving it in place for now; if it is failing, we can replace it with a tooth-coloured alternative.

The treatment process

1. Assessment. We examine the tooth, and take X-rays where needed, to understand the extent of any decay or damage.

2. Preparation. Under local anaesthetic, any decay or old filling material is removed and the tooth is prepared.

3. Placement. The composite is layered into the tooth, shaped, and hardened with a curing light.

4. Finishing. The filling is adjusted to your bite and polished so it looks and feels like the rest of your tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do white fillings last?

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, white fillings can last many years. How long depends on the size and position of the filling, your bite and habits such as grinding.

Can I replace my silver fillings with white ones?

Yes. We assess your current fillings and advise which, if any, would benefit from replacement.

Do white fillings hurt?

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, so most patients feel very little during treatment. Some mild sensitivity afterwards is normal and usually settles within a few days.

Are white fillings as strong as metal fillings?

Modern composite materials are durable and suitable for most fillings, including many on back teeth. For very large repairs, we may recommend an alternative such as an inlay or crown, and we will explain why.

What is the difference between a white filling and composite bonding?

Both use tooth-coloured composite. White fillings repair decay or damage; composite bonding is a cosmetic treatment that reshapes teeth, repairs chips or closes small gaps.
