Gum disease starts as gingivitis — inflammation of the gum tissue with no bone involvement. Left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, where the infection begins to break down the bone and ligament holding your teeth in place.

Gums begin to detach, forming pockets of 4–5mm. Mild bone loss visible on X-ray. Stabilised non-surgically.
Pockets of 5–7mm, visible recession, occasional looseness. Scaling and root planing plus close monitoring.
Pockets 7mm+, significant bone loss, mobile teeth. Surgical and regenerative options — most teeth still saveable.
Recession can be treated with soft-tissue grafting, restoring coverage over exposed roots and reducing sensitivity.
Gums can also settle back a little after gum disease treatment, as the swelling goes down. Small gaps between the teeth are a sign of healthier gums, and they can be masked with a gum veneer, bonding or veneers. We’ll always talk this through with you first.

Pocket charting, X-rays and a full periodontal diagnosis, usually 45–60 minutes. We measure six points around every tooth and record them, so we can track improvement over time. Healthy gums measure under 4mm and don’t bleed.
Surgical soft-tissue grafting restores coverage over exposed roots.
Often recommended when roots are exposed or sensitive, or when receding gums are affecting how your smile looks. Unlike a gum veneer, it’s fixed rather than removable. It’s planned and carried out by Dr Gita Auplish.

Your first assessment takes 45–60 minutes. Deep cleaning under local anaesthetic is usually done in two appointments, treating half of your mouth at each. We then re-check your gums after around eight weeks of healing. After that, hygienist visits every three months help keep them stable.
Gingivitis, the early stage, can be fully reversed. Once periodontitis has caused bone loss, the lost bone won’t grow back on its own, but the disease can be stabilised. With good daily care and regular hygienist visits, many patients keep their gums stable for decades.
Not necessarily. Even when gum disease is advanced, treatment can often stabilise the gums and help you keep your natural teeth. Gum disease is often painless until it’s well developed, so the sooner you’re seen, the more options you have.
